Ms. Ortega is so excited to join the Equitas team as a second grade teacher. At Equitas Academy, Ms. Ortega found a school whose mission statement aligned with her values and call to education. She believes that all students deserve access to a high-quality education and a rigorous school experience and cannot wait to work closely with the scholars and families of Pico-Union. Her experiences attending inner-city public schools gave her a clear perspective on the need for high quality and dedicated teachers to serve students and their families in order to get them to and through college. With a desire to make a difference, Ms. Ortega decided to pursue her passion for education to become a teacher that prepares students with a solid academic foundation. She was a first-generation college student and graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and her CA Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential. Throughout her time at LMU, Ms. Ortega worked with K-5 students as a reading and writing tutor at 826LA and Playa Vista Elementary School. She taught Restorative Art Classes at Westside Global Awareness K-6 Magnet School and wrote a weeklong art curriculum that she taught at Hoopa Valley Elementary School in Northern California. Ms. Ortega spent her summer teaching a science camp for first and second grade students at the California Science Center with a chemistry and biology focus. Outside of the classroom, she likes to go running, read, and eat at new restaurants.
